Textual Analysis of Music Magazine Pages

Front Page

The magazine's Masthead is big and bold, and it stands out from the background as they are contrasting colours. The main artist, 'Loick Essien' only slightly is covering part of the Masthead, which is effective because it shows how important the artist is. The subtitles coming across the artist are in boxes with contrasting colours so the audience can clearly see what it says in them. Also, the different titles of people on the right hand side are in contrasting colours to the background to show importance to them. The fact there is a 'Plus' title, shows that there are important things to read within in the magazine.
The entire cover page use the same colours, being white, red and black. These colours could connote innocence, yet danger. This is effective because it shows the magazine means no harm, yet could hold information that could be seen as gossip.

The magazine's contents page is clearly stated as the contents page by the word 'CONTENTS' in the top right hand side of the page. The pictures on the left hand side of the page show the audience what kind of stuff that the magazine includes. The writing on the page is also very clear and bold as it is contrasting to the background. there aren't any empty spaces on the page because there is a lot of information telling the audience what there is to read about. the lines between the contents show that they are split up, and clearly shows that they are separate pages. The images on the left hand side are outlined by the colour red, connoting danger and interest, making the audience want to know the story behind the images. As there are page numbers on the pictures, it shows that the magazine cares for navigation and wants the audience to find their way around their magazine easily.

This magazine's double page spread shows the artist's name clearly, in white coloured font. This can connote innocence. As there are two big images, it shows the audience how important this artist is and it makes the audience familiar with who he is. As the page is a Q&A page, the questions and answers are in different coloured fonts. This is to show the audience a difference between the artist and the magazine. The sections of the writing is very organised and clean. This is because they are split into three sections. This is to fit in as much writing as they possibly can. The bold black writing beneath the main picture on the left is there to show the audience what the following pages are about.

Title Block Analysis

‘The Source’ is a Hip-Hop magazine and the font type and colours benefit this. The name is effective because it says it is the ‘Source’ meaning that if you want information, this magazine is the place to find it. As it is a Hip=hop magazine, we can expect the magazine to talk about different artists and information, and the title block allows this.
The ‘Vibe’ magazine is an urban music based magazine. The red colour that they use is effective because it is a contrasting colour to the background, there making it stand out so the audience can easily make out what it is saying. The red could connote violence and blood, and as the music they show can be quite violent, they suit very well.
‘Beatz’ magazine is a magazine that shows off many different genres, one including Grime. The background could also connote danger and violence again. Also, as it is a grime genre, it could also connote gang culture, which is something that the genre represents. However, the white writing connotes innocence, which shows that the genres it represents are not only dangerous, but safe at the same time.

Reader Profile

The GRIME TIME Reader

Tyrone, 17, listens to Grime music 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. He absolutely loves this type of music that he would rather have a night in listening to it than going out with his mates. He uses the different artists he sees as role models and is fanatical of their specific clothing. Wherever he goes, he is dressed in dark, baggy clothes, with his hood up, making himself look like a typical hooligan. From the moment he opens his eyes when he wakes, until the moment he closes them, Grime is playing constantly throughout the day. He is always the first in his school to find out new music that artists release, and gives the deep recognition by following them on every social media websites. The way the different artists present themselves have an effect on him in many ways. These include social, physical and mental factors.
